2014 Commit – Triston Crossland

Here’s a testament to the UTSA coaching staff. Triston Crossland was considered a UTSA-lean as a preferred walk-on for quite some time. He turned down a few Division II offers to chase his dream of playing Division I football. While on his official visit, Crossland was promised a scholarship starting in the spring of 2015 (I’ve recently learned that this recruiting agreement is called a “blue shirt” offer). Triston was sold and solidified his commitment to UTSA. After the coaching staff learned that Jared McGee would be vacating his scholarship to grey shirt at Northwestern, Coach Coker dialed up Crossland and offered him a full scholarship starting in 2014. UTSA could have easily used that open scholarship to lure another athlete but they stuck to their word and gave Triston the first available scholarship. That display of integrity isn’t something that high school coaches soon forget.

Crossland is a promising athlete that could grow into several different roles, depending on how he gains mass. I think his most likely outcome is adding ~10 pounds and becoming UTSA’s next David Morgan– a large but nimble body that lines up at tight end but can slide outside to a slot receiver in certain packages. If Crossland were to really pack on the weight and hit the 240+ range then I see him developing into a more traditional tight end although that need has already been addressed in this class with the commitment of Cameron Oliver. I could also see Triston getting a shot on the defensive side of the ball as he has a great frame for a defensive end or an outside linebacker. I know you guys are tired of hearing it, but a guy like Crossland could help at several different positions which is the key in 2014.
