2014 Commits #7 & #8 – Jared McGee/Travin Howard

Very nice week of recruiting for UTSA as they followed up on David Anzaldua’s Birds Up with commitments from Mansfield Legacy free safety Jared McGee and Longview safety Travin Howard. I expect Howard to man the “Rover” safety position in UTSA’s defense, providing a nice duo alongside McGee. Jared is an extremely athletic safety with great closing speed. I really like his ability to make plays with the ball in the air. McGee is a prototypical “centerfield” safety that knows how to read quarterbacks’ eyes and body posture to know where the ball is going to end up before it is thrown. McGee stands at 6’1″, 190 pounds and reports a 4.58 second 40 yard dash. Jared was heavily recruited by Navy and SMU but UTSA was the only school to offer him a scholarship. After viewing his junior highlights (no 2013 highlights available at this time), one area McGee will have to improve in before playing at the Division I level is finishing his tackles. McGee is a bit receptive on his tackles and doesn’t pump his feet through contact. Larger athletes will be able to break through such tackles. Overall, UTSA is getting a tremendous playmaker that will excel in pass coverage.

Coker landed a hidden gym in Travin Howard. Coming into his senior season, Howard’s teammate Stephen Maxey was the main recruiting target in the Longview secondary. Maxey even had a scholarship offer from UTSA. By the end of the season Howard landed an offer from UTSA and was voted his district’s MVP over Maxey. This serves as a reminder of how early recruiting can be hazardous– If UTSA accepts a commitment from Maxey then they end up losing out on a better player that just needed a few months to blossom. Howard is a tremendous athlete that can play at several positions on the field. I’ve seen him line up at free safety, strong safety, nine-technique defensive end, and even return punts. That versatility is exactly what UTSA is looking for in this smaller class. Howard finished his senior season with 65 tackles, seven tackles for loss, one sack, five interceptions, three forced fumbles, seven pass breakups, one punt block, one defensive touchdown, and returned three punts for touchdowns. Travin is a guy that I expect to play early in college. Howard put up very impressive numbers at the East Texas Sports Network combine and is very savvy in man coverage. A total coup for UTSA.
