2015 Commit #1: Furquan Shorts
Superlatives: 24/7 3* WR. 2013 All District 15 – 5A selection
2013 Stats: 34 Reception for 400 Yards and 2 Touchdowns
My Take: After a lot of teeth gnashing and hand wringing due to the slow build that was the 2014 UTSA signing class, Coach Coker and the staff wasted no time getting things rolling for 2015. After getting an offer while visiting campus during UTSA’s junior day Atascocita WR Furquan “Quann” Shorts pulled the trigger and became the inaugural commit of the 2015 recruiting class. Measuring in at 6’2″ and 180 pounds, Quan has a reported 40 yard dash time of 4.42 seconds. A teammate of 2014 signee Greg Campbell, Quann shows a lot of the same things that Campbell did on film. While Campbell showed his escapability and speed at the QB position, Quan did most of his work in the slot. He is used in a lot of the same ways that current UTSA standout Kam Jones is. He’s used in the screen game, the run game, and also occasionally on the outside as a stretch the field WR. A track standout, Quann has been timed as running the 100 yard dash in the 10.7 range. With his track speed and ability to get yardage after the catch, Shorts brings a varied skill set that gives the staff a lot of options come game day. His ability to move inside and outside is a weapon the staff hasn’t had in our short existence.
WR Recruiting Moving Forward: With the exodus of most of the WR corp after the 2014 season, the staff will probably look to sign at least 3 WR’s in this class. After signing Campbell and Kerry Thomas in the last class, UTSA still looks a bit thin going into the 2015 season with Kenny Bias, Aaron Grubb, and Aron Taylor being the only players on the current roster expected to contribute after this season.
