2015 Prospect Primer: Quarterbacks

2015 Prospect Primer: Quarterbacks

A position of great strength and depth was shook up by the graduation of Saint Eric Soza, and the defection of the mythological golden boy Zach Conque. The 2014 recruiting class saw the addition of scholarship signee (Saint in waiting?) Blake Bogenschutz, and Ben Arbuckle as a Preferred Walk-On. Presumed 2014 starter Tucker Carter is a Senior, so we are staring at a depth chart of 1 RS Sophomore (Austin Robinson), and the 2 aforementioned RS (hopefully) Freshmen.
What all this means is that 2015 is a VERY important class for QB recruiting. Don’t be surprised if we target 2 HS QB’s, with a JUCO wildcard thrown into the mix. So far (according to InsideUTSA.com) the staff has offered 4 QB’s. JW Ketchum, Manny Harris, L.G. Williams, and De’Shawn Key have been offered as QB’s. Ketchum is a pipe dream that won’t happen, so I’m going to breakdown the other 3 QB’s with offers. A theme with the early offers that have gone out at QB is that they staff seems to be targeting duel threat QBs.
Side Note: Billy McCrary is a 3 star athlete that plays QB for his HS team, but will most definitely be moved to WR or Safety in college.

Manny Harris
6’2” 215 lb
Copperas Cove High School
3409 Yards Passing, 35 TDs 8 INTs
507 Yards Rushing with 7 TDs

Though listed as a duel threat QB in the Rivals system, the thing that stands out to me the most about Manny is his presence in the pocket. A thick-bodied kid with good height that can sling the ball around the field. Harris has offers from UTSA and TXST right now, but has started to receive interest from schools like Houston and Baylor. Already having visited the campus for our Junior Day and for this past weekend’s open scrimmage, Harris is showing legit interest. This is a guy to keep an eye on as the spring winds down. If he’s at our Spring Game then we may be on commitment watch.

L.G. Williams
5’10” 185lb
Cibolo Steele HS
1667 Yards Passing 17 TDs 3 INTs
944 Yards Rushing 8 TDs

A much more “prototypical” dual threat QB, LG is very electric with the ball in his hands. He didn’t put up huge passing numbers, but shows a strong arm with the ability to get the ball down the field. A local kid from the Cibolo Steele powerhouse, this is the type of kid UTSA needs to get on campus. Little has been heard from him since he received the scholarship offer, but he was at the UTSA junior day. Another one to monitor as our Spring Game approaches.

Da’Shawn Key
6’0″ 175lbs
San Antonio Brennan High School
1671 Yards Passing 21 TDs 3 INTs
1486 Yards Rushing 26 TDs

Key is a dynamic athlete from budding San Antonio power Brennan High School. A true difference maker with the football in his hands, many project him as a slot WR or even RB in college. Offered by UTSA as a QB, Key will be given every chance to be the man at QB if he were to sign with the good guys. Showing only a UTSA offer at the moment, don’t be surprised to see him get some big school offers as an Athlete as the season progresses. Key was also at the UTSA junior day, and has shown legit interest in becoming a ‘Runner.
