2015 Recruiting Primer: Running Backs
Now that the ’14 class has been locked in (with maybe 2 more schollies to toss at May Jucos) I think it’s about time to look at what’s going to be left in the cupboard after the ’14 season. That way we can get a feel for what the ’15 recruiting class may or may not need. I’ll be doing these sporadically over the next few weeks, and let’s start with Running Back.
Seniors Departing: David Glasco III, Brandon Armstrong and Nate Shaw
Underclassmen Returning: Brian Vaughn (SR), Treston Coleman (R-JR), Jarveon Williams (JR), Jalen Rhodes (SO – If he doesn’t redshirt this season), Triston Crossland (R-FR Assuming he sticks at H-Back and Red Shirts)
All three Seniors are big time parts of the offense, and will be missed. Glasco and Armstrong accounted for a pretty decent amount of the carries in ’13 and look for them to be just as big a part of the offense in ’14. Jarveon Williams has a chance to get in there and cement himself as the RB of the future this season. Assuming he’s able to do that and Jalen Rhodes shows himself to be healthy we should return 2 capable backs in ’15. Brian Vaughn will be our only Senior on the roster in ’15. He hasn’t show a ton the past 2 seasons, and if he doesn’t become a consistent contributor this season I don’t think it’ll ever happen.
If Crossland can come in and become a willing blocker in the backfield he can solve a lot of the issues we’ll have when Nate Shaw moves on. Crossland can be a much more varied weapon with his ability to catch the ball. He’ll be one to monitor in fall practices and next spring, a true potential X-factor for the offense. Treston Coleman is a big-bodied back that put up big numbers in high school but hasn’t been able to find any PT thus far. I think he got hurt and ended up putting on some bad weight. If he can get back into shape he also has a chance to get some of the Nate Shaw Snaps.
My guess is that we are going to go heavy at RB in the ’15 class. 2 legit ball carriers, and another H-Back type that can move around the field. Going into next season we could potentially have one Running Back that has had significant game action in Jarveon. If Jalen Rhodes can come in, show that he’s healthy, and earn carries as the season progresses that would be pretty huge.
The state of Texas is absolutely STACKED at running back in the ’15 class. 5 national top 25 running backs alone. Which means the big boys in the state won’t have to “settle” for the mid major talents to fill their squads. This is a good thing for us.
