UTSA offers Groesbeck ATH Matt Barnes
Per his Twitter account, UTSA has sent out another offer today as the march towards National Signing Day frenzy comes to a fold. Matt Barnes is a 6’3″, 220 lb. utility athlete from Groesbeck, TX. His Hudl profile lists running back as his primary position, but he plays receiver and tight end almost exclusively in his highlight video. Even though receiver is far from a position of need for UTSA, Barnes is a damn good athlete that would see the field at some point, at some position. His size and speed leads me to believe that he is a replacement to Amarillo athlete Montrel Meander who recently removed UTSA from his top three recruiting choices. Barnes claims a 4.5 second 40 which matches up with the eyeball test I gave in his video. His size makes him particularly effective over the middle of the field and he knows how to take advantage of mismatches on the sideline. The sizeable receiver also loves to get past the coverage with double moves.
Barnes has offers from New Mexico and Air Force, and took a visit to TCU in June. My only area of concern with Barnes is that the staff seems to be passing up on Joshua Reynolds, a local receiver that has an extremely similar skill set to Barnes. Reynolds has an offer from Oregon State but he doesn’t hold any other offers. Why not take a stab at keeping a stud player in town?
