Zach Conque to transfer to SFA

2014 is off to a poor start for Roadrunner fans. Last night Inside Roadrunner Sports broke news that reserve quarterback Zach Conque will be transferring to Stephen F. Austin to play for his father. Even though Conque probably wasn’t going to win the starting job over Tucker Carter, this is still a massive hit to the quarterback position for UTSA. In the immediacy, UTSA will have just one quarterback on scholarship to back up Carter, assuming that Bogenschutz still receives a redshirt in 2014. I’ve been told that Austin Robinson has impressed with his feet while working out on the practice squad but I remain unconvinced that he has the arm strength to match that of Conque. Robinson also has spent less time learning the system as Conque but this can be overcome with an increase in first-team snaps seen during the spring. To this day, I remain convinced that Conque will see some amount of time in the NFL. Guys with 6’6″, 230 lbs measurables and a 4.5 second 40 yard dash that can throw the deep ball simply do not fly under the NFL’s radar. All things considered, you really can’t blame Zach for transferring out. Being able to play for your dad is a fantastic opportunity and Conque should be the starter from day one at any FCS program. SFA hasn’t had any problems getting players to the next level in the past so that isn’t a concern. The fact of the matter is that Conque needs game-time snaps to develop as a signal caller and he was not going to get many until 2015.

Another immediate problem is that UTSA only has two quarterbacks on the roster for the spring. The Roadrunners will want to have at least four to have an efficient and competitive spring campaign. Look for UTSA to reach out to JUCO and lower-level quarterbacks with walk-on opportunities. If anyone knows any quarterbacks with local ties that could be a target, post a comment and let us know. Chance Barlow (Oklahoma Panhandle) and Kyle Keller (Blinn) come to mind.

So can UTSA still be a very good football team in the future without Conque? Yes, of course, but I’m not as convinced that they become a C-USA powerhouse without him. Needless to say, Austin Robinson will have a lot of eyes on him this spring. How are you guys feeling about the QB position moving forward?
